Council Background

As its last confirmed habitat in Honshu, Ishikawa Prefecture has strong ties to the Japanese crested ibis, and has thus far promoted various efforts to position the bird as a symbol of biodiversity and Noto’s Satoyama-Satoumi. In May 2022, the Government of Japan launched a public call for applications as candidate sites outside of Sado Island for its release back into the wild. In response, the Noto Region Crested Ibis Release Promotion Council was established by the prefectural government with the support of nine cities and towns in Noto, in addition to other related organizations.
