Summary

1. Opening Ceremony

On behalf of the organizers, Ishikawa Governor Tanimoto along with 3 other members addressed the gathering and declared the conference open. Also, Ishikawa Governor Tanimoto delivered the keynote speech on the Passing on GIAHS Noto's Satoyama and Satoumi to Future Generations.

2. High-Level Session

Discussions were held on how to contribute to solving global issues such as the prevention of global warming and protection of biodiversity through the GIAHS Program.

3. Technical Sessions

At the technical sessions, persons involved with designated GIAHS sites presented case studies on the three themes Economy, Society and Environment.

4. Commemorative Symposium

Lectures and a panel discussion were held on the theme of 10 Years of GIAHS -Efforts, Achievements, and Outlook for the Future.

5. Closing Session

 (a) Synthesis Report of Technical Sessions and Adoption of Noto Communique 2021

After the report on the three technical sessions held over two days was presented, the Noto Communique 2021 was adopted, which calls for the promotion of cooperation among designated sites and support for sites in developing countries seeking designation.

 (b) Youth Session Report and GIAHS Youth Declaration

Five high school students, representing each school that participated in the Youth Session held as a related event, took to the stage to present a report on the session as well as the GIAHS Youth Declaration compiled during the session. In addition, ambassadors and a charge d'affaires a.i to Japan from countries that are interested in GIAHS (the ambassadors of Burkina Faso and the Republic of Senegal, and the Charge d'affaires a.i of the Republic of Peru), who attended the session, gave statements regarding their impressions of attending the conference, and their thoughts on GIAHS.

6. Related Events

 (a) J-GIAHS Alliance Meeting

To further strengthen cooperation among sites designated as important agricultural heritage systems in Japan, representatives from GIAHS and J-NIAHS sites in Japan gathered for a meeting.

 (b) Dialogue between Ishikawa Governor Tanimoto and Ambassadors to Japan Interested in GIAHS

Ishikawa Governor Tanimoto held talks with the ambassadors of Burkina Faso and the Republic of Senegal as well as the Charge d'Affaires a.i of the Republic of Peru to introduce initiatives undertaken by Ishikawa prefecture, and exchange opinions on the challenges faced by each country.

 (c) Dialogue between FAO Director-General Qu and Ishikawa Governor Tanimoto (Conducted in private)

FAO Director-General Qu attended an online meeting with Ishikawa Governor Tanimoto. He expressed his expressed his thanks to Ishikawa Prefecture for all its efforts to date, while Ishikawa Governor Tanimoto expressed his determination to expand the Ishikawa International Cooperation Program for GIAHS and make further international contributions.

 (d) Dialogue between Noto Stakeholders and Ambassadors to Japan Interested in GIAHS

The Ambassadors of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Senegal, and the Charge d'Affaires a.i of the Republic of Peru visited Shunran-no-Sato in Noto Town, and held meeting with local stakeholders.

 (e) Youth Session (GIAHS Youth Summit)

There were group discussions and presentations made by high school and university students, including students from Noto and Sado, who are expected to become the future successors of GIAHS.

7. Excursions

In addition to introducing the agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries and the culture of the various regions of Noto, excursions were organized where participants could directly experience the charm of "Noto’s Satoyama and Satoumi".

What’s is the purpose of International Conference on GIAHS 2021

An international conference was held in 2021 in Noto to bring together international organizations and people involved in GIAHS to commemorate the 10th anniversary of “Noto’s Satoyama and Satoumi” being designated as the GIAHS site.
Although the speakers from overseas were only able to speak online to prevent the spread of COVID-19, this conference disseminated the initiatives and achievements of “Noto’s Satoyama and Satoumi” both at home and abroad.

About the Local Executive Committee

The Local Executive Committee comprises Ishikawa Prefecture, MAFF, FAO, UNU-IAS and Noto Regional Association for GIAHS Promotion and Cooperation, working collaboratively with each other in support for the hosting of International Conference on GIAHS 2021. The committee was found in June of 2021.
