Architectural Design

The design of Kanazawa Castle emphasizes horizontal lines, while that of European churches and castles, like most Gothic style buildings, emphasizes vertical lines. The beauty of Japanese castles, including Kanazawa Castle, results from many factors, such as lead roof tiles, Namako Kabe, and others. This architectural emphasis on beauty was possible only because the country was peaceful in the Edo period. However, the main goal of the castle construction was of course defense from enemies.
